60+ Midjourney Prompts That Actually Work in 2026 (V7)

By Lei Jin ·

Most "best Midjourney prompts" lists fail for a simple reason: they were written for older models and ignore how V7 actually interprets language. A good prompt in 2026 is not a pile of keywords — it is a short, concrete description of subject, setting, lighting, lens and composition, with parameters doing the technical work.

This is the collection I keep coming back to. Every prompt below is written to work on Midjourney V7; copy it, change the subject, and use it as a starting point rather than a finished answer. For more tools in the same category, see the image tools directory and the full Midjourney review.

The prompt structure that works

Before the list, the formula. Five building blocks, in roughly this order:

  1. Subject — who or what, with specific detail ("a 60-year-old Japanese fisherman", not "a person").
  2. Setting/context — where and what is happening.
  3. Lighting — golden hour, softbox, neon, overcast; this single choice changes everything.
  4. Style/lens/composition — film still, 35mm, Dutch angle, shallow depth of field.
  5. Parameters — aspect ratio, stylize, references.
Rule of thumb: if you can delete a word and the image would not change, delete it. V7 rewards specificity, not length.

Key parameters for 2026

  • --ar 16:9 — widescreen for video thumbnails and b-roll; --ar 4:5 for portrait social posts; --ar 1:1 for feeds.
  • --stylize 0–1000 — how strongly the model imposes its aesthetic. Low for literal product shots, high for art.
  • --chaos 0–100 — variation in the initial grid; raise it when exploring, keep it at 0 for control.
  • --cref <image-url> — character reference for consistent people across images.
  • --sref <image-url> — style reference to lock a visual look.
  • --tile — seamless patterns.
  • --raw — less default beautification; useful for gritty or documentary looks.

How to get consistent results

Single images are easy; a usable series is where most people get stuck. Three techniques that work on V7:

  1. Character consistency: generate your best portrait, copy its image URL, and add --cref <url> --cw 100 to every new prompt. Lower --cw (character weight) to 50 when you need flexibility in pose or clothing.
  2. Style consistency: save one image whose look you love and use it as --sref <url> across the whole set; combine it with the same --stylize value.
  3. Locked aspect and palette: keep identical --ar and describe lighting the same way each time — "soft overcast morning light" in every prompt does more for visual cohesion than any keyword.

If you need even tighter control — exact poses, reusable characters across hundreds of images — that is where open tools take over. See the tutorial on consistent AI characters and the Stable Diffusion review.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Keyword salad. "4k, 8k, ultra detailed, masterpiece, trending on artstation" adds nothing on V7 and can flatten the result. Describe what you actually see.
  • Contradictory lighting. "golden hour" plus "moonlit night" confuses the model; pick one.
  • Ignoring the lens. Adding "85mm, shallow depth of field" or "wide angle 24mm" fixes composition more reliably than adjectives.
  • Accepting the first grid. Reroll 3–5 times, then upscale; the difference between good and great is curation.
  • Expecting correct text. V7 improved, but for designs where typography matters, Ideogram is still the safer tool.

FAQ

Is Midjourney V7 better than V6 for prompts?

Yes, but differently. V7 follows natural language more closely, so full descriptive sentences outperform comma-separated keyword lists. Old prompts often produce different, sometimes flatter images — they are worth rewriting using the structure at the top of this guide.

Do these prompts work in other image generators?

The structure transfers everywhere, but the parameters do not. --ar, --stylize and --cref are Midjourney-specific. The same descriptions work well in Leonardo AI and DALL·E 3 with minor rewording.

How many prompts do I need to generate for one good image?

Plan for roughly 10–20 generations per final image in professional work: several grids, a few upscales and variations. Treat generation cost as part of the process rather than expecting the first prompt to land.
